Visual Hierarchy Principles
What is Visual Hierarchy?
Visual hierarchy is the arrangement of elements that shows their order of importance. It guides the viewer's eye through your content in a logical sequence.
The 5 Tools of Visual Hierarchy
1. Size
Larger elements draw attention first.- Titles should be the largest text
- Key numbers or stats can be oversized
- Supporting text should be smaller
2. Color & Contrast
High contrast elements stand out.- Use your accent color for key points
- Dark text on light backgrounds (or vice versa)
- Avoid too many colors—2-3 maximum
3. Position
We read top-to-bottom, left-to-right (in English).- Most important content at top-left
- Conclusions can go at bottom for emphasis
- Center alignment for titles and focus elements
4. White Space
Empty space creates breathing room and focus.- Don't fill every inch of the slide
- Margins make content feel professional
- Space between elements creates groupings
5. Alignment
Aligned elements feel organized and professional.- Pick left, center, or right—be consistent
- Use grid/layout system for structure
- Misaligned elements look accidental
The Squint Test
Squint at your slide. Can you still see:
- What's most important?
- Logical groupings?
- Clear structure?
If not, your hierarchy needs work.
Common Hierarchy Mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Everything is bold | Bold only key words |
| Too many colors | Use 2-3 colors max |
| No clear title | Make title largest |
| Wall of text | Use bullets and spacing |
| Random alignment | Pick one and stick to it |
Practice Exercise
Look at the slides you create this module. For each one, ask:
- What do you see first?
- What do you see second?
- Does this match the order of importance?
