Design Your Product

Capstone: Product Model Portfolio Piece

Create a professional-quality product model suitable for your portfolio.

Choose Your Project

Pick ONE from these categories:

Option A: Tech Accessory

  • Wireless earbuds case
  • Cable organizer
  • Laptop stand
  • USB hub enclosure

Option B: Home Product

  • Desk lamp (simplified)
  • Planter/pot
  • Coaster set
  • Bookend

Option C: Tool/Gadget

  • Phone grip
  • Key holder
  • Bottle opener
  • Desk organizer

Requirements

Technical

  • Minimum 3 boolean operations
  • At least 5 distinct parts/shapes
  • Proper scale (fits in 20×20×20 cm)
  • Export both GLB and STL

Quality

  • Clean geometry
  • Thoughtful proportions
  • Consistent style
  • Proper materials assigned

Documentation

  • Name all objects clearly
  • Decide on a "primary dimension"
  • Use parametric relationships

Workflow

Phase 1: Planning (15 min)

  1. Sketch your design on paper
  2. List all components
  3. Define dimensions parametrically
  4. Plan boolean operations

Phase 2: Block-out (20 min)

  1. Create basic shapes
  2. Position roughly
  3. Check proportions
  4. Adjust as needed

Phase 3: Refinement (30 min)

  1. Perfect dimensions
  2. Perform boolean operations
  3. Add details
  4. Check from all angles

Phase 4: Polish (15 min)

  1. Assign materials and colors
  2. Name all objects
  3. Hide construction objects
  4. Final review

Phase 5: Export (10 min)

  1. Export GLB (web-ready)
  2. Export STL (print-ready)
  3. Test GLB in browser (optional)

Success Criteria

✓ At least one object in final scene
✓ GLB exported successfully
✓ STL exported successfully
✓ Model fits within size limits

Tips for a Great Portfolio Piece

  1. Tell a story - What problem does it solve?
  2. Show your process - Screenshots of stages
  3. Include specs - Dimensions, materials
  4. Be consistent - One cohesive style
  5. Quality over complexity - Simple but polished

Bonus Challenges

  • Add a logo cutout (subtract)
  • Create interlocking parts
  • Design for actual printing
  • Add subtle details (chamfers, fillets approximated with shapes)
Good luck! Make something you're proud to show.
